Why Supporting Women Entrepreneurs Is Good for the Economy
Women are central to Africa’s entrepreneurial economy.
Yet access to finance remains a major challenge for many women-owned and women-led businesses.
The African Development Bank reported in September 2026 that Africa has the world’s highest rate of female entrepreneurship while women entrepreneurs still face an estimated $49 billion financing gap. Its new programme with AXIAN aims to support more than 34,000 women-led businesses through digital finance, financial literacy and business development services.
This highlights an important principle:
Financial inclusion should not stop at opening an account.
People also need access to appropriate financial products, knowledge, technology, markets and opportunities.
Supporting women entrepreneurs can strengthen:
- Household incomes
- Small businesses
- Employment
- Community development
- Economic resilience
